our industry.
ASME BPVC
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers
Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. This is the
construction code for new boilers and pressure
vessels for the
entire industry. If an owner has a vessel
built outside of these rules, then he usually
has to write a specific engineering exemption.
ASME
Process
Pipe Codes
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers
Piping Codes. These are the numerous
construction codes for process piping for the industry.
API Codes
The American Petroleum Institute has crafted
several codes covering almost everything
associated with the petroleum industry.
From searching for new bodies of oil reserves,
through the refining process, to the sale of
gasoline to your car, the API has a written

NBIC
The National Board Inspection Code
is crafted by the National Board of Boiler and
Pressure Vessel Inspectors.
This code is the law in most states regarding
the construction and repairs of boilers and
pressure vessels. These laws enforced
by the state regulating authority (the

AWS

numerous codes and documents regarding all
aspects of welding and materials joining.
All of the above mentioned codes reference the
AWS codes at various times.
